Wolverines rally past Chatham

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 5-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by pulling out a 49-43 win over host Chatham in conference action at the Chatham Center.

Grove City (9-11 overall) closed the game on an 8-0 run over the final three minutes of the game. Grove City trailed 43-41 but took the lead for good with 2:58 left on a three-pointer from senior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton). Szelong and junior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) helped close out the victory in the final 20 seconds by both hitting two free throws.

Sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) posted a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double for Grove City while Szelong added 12 points. Szelong scored 10 of her points in the second half. Miller added nine points.

Grove City jumped out to a 7-0 lead and eventually stretched the lead to 16-6. Chatham (9-11, 2-8) cut Grove City's lead to 23-19 by halftime. The Cougars then opened the second half with a 13-2 run and grabbed a 32-25 advantage. Grove City countered with a 10-2 spurt to re-take a 35-34 lead. A three-point play by Miller and two free throws from freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) capped the run.

Grove City shot 16 of 54 (30 percent) from the field, including a 5-for-11 effort on three-pointers. Defensively, the Wolverines held Chatham to 28 percent (17 of 61) shooting from the floor. Grove City also out-rebounded Chatham 47-36.

Kayla Hilko led Chatham with 13 points. Chatham had won each of the previous three meetings, including a 53-49 triumph in Grove City January 3.

Grove City will host Thomas More Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
