Wolverines charge past Thiel, 75-64
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team wrapped up the 2008-09 regular season Saturday afternoon with a come-from-behind 75-64 win over host Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.
With the win, Grove City (11-14, 7-7 PAC) clinched the No. 4 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament. The Wolverines will host fifth-seeded Thiel (10-14, 5-9 PAC) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Grove City trailed 30-28 at halftime but posted 47 second-half points. The Wolverines shot 14 of 28 (50 percent) from the field in the second half and committed just seven second-half turnovers.
Sophomore forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in 19 of her team-high 25 points in the second half of Saturday's win. Freshman guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) racked up 14 points while senior guard Raeann Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) added 13 points. Junior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 11 points.
Slater also grabbed 11 rebounds in recording her conference-best 10th double-double of the season. Grove City out-rebounded Thiel 40-36. For the game, Grove City shot 44 percent (24 of 54) while Thiel shot 25 of 58 (43 percent).
Amber Bodrick led Thiel with 25 points while Ashley Davis added a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Grove City's 7-7 conference record is the Wolverines' best since the 2004-05 team went 8-2 in league play.
Grove City will host Thiel Tuesday in the PAC quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Thiel won at Grove City January 21, 54-44. The teams have never met in the PAC Championship Tournament.
