Wolverines fall in opener

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season Tuesday night with a 61-49 setback at longtime rival Allegheny in non-conference action at the David Wise Center.

Grove City trailed 29-26 at halftime but the Wolverines shot just 22 percent from the field (8 for 36) in the second half. The Wolverines went over six minutes without a field goal during the half as Allegheny extended its lead to as many as 14 points.

Grove City slashed the lead to 49-42 with five minutes remaining when junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) drilled a pair of free throws. However, the Wolverines could get no closer down the stretch.

Slater led Grove City with 17 points and 10 rebounds while senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 10 points.

Senior Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) hauled in nine rebounds, helping Grove City earn a 42-33 edge on the glass. Twenty-four of Grove City's rebounds came at the offensive end.

Grove City shot 21 of 64 (33 percent) from the field while Allegheny shot 22 of 49 (45 percent). Grove City committed 24 turnovers while Allegheny had 23 miscues.

Emilie Simone led Allegheny (1-0) with 14 points while Jill Gregory added 13 points.

Grove City will face Kenyon Friday night at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the Penn State Behrend Tournament in Erie, Pa.
