Behrend tops Wolverines

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped an 80-57 decision to host Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament at the Junker Center.

Four Grove City players scored in double figures but the Wolverines could not overcome 29 turnovers. Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) paced Grove City with 14 points while senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) fired in a dozen points. Freshman guard Brittany Wenzell (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) recorded a season-high 11 points and senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Grove City (0-3) jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first half before Behrend charged back. Behrend closed the first half on an 11-2 run and led 43-27 at halftime. The Lions then maintained a double-digit lead in the second half.

Beechy added five assists Grove City. Slater pulled down eight rebounds, helping the Wolverines claim a 43-41 edge in rebounding. Grove City shot 25 of 67 (37 percent) from the floor while Penn State Behrend made 26 of 64 (41 percent) attempts. Behrend also went 25 for 31 at the foul line while Grove City made six of eight free throws.

Amy Oldach led the Lions with 15 points while Kelly Nowacinski added 14 points.

Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the Wolverines' home opener.
