Grove City stuns No. 19 W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned a 72-70 victory over 19th-ranked Washington & Jefferson (5-1) Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Center. It is Grove City's first win over the Presidents since February 12, 2005.

Grove City (2-4, 1-1 PAC) closed the game on a 7-2 run. A three-pointer from junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) tied the game at 68 with 1:46 left. The Wolverines then took the lead for good 24 seconds later when freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) drilled a pair of free throws.

Sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added two more free throws with 21 seconds left, pushing the lead to 72-68. W&J's Vanessa Rivera halved the lead with a putback and after a Grove City miss at the foul line, W&J had a chance to tie the game. However, senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) blocked a shot by guard Kennan Killeen at the buzzer to preserve the win.

Slater led Grove City with 22 points while Gebrosky fired in a career-high 17 points. Freshman guard Brittany Wenzell (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) drilled five three-point goals for a career-high 15 points. Grove City drained a dozen three-pointers in the game.

Grove City jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led by as many as nine, 27-18, in the first half. W&J (0-1 PAC) eventually tied the game at 35 by halftime. In the second half, the Wolverines led by five on three different occasions but could not pull away.

Slater grabbed seven rebounds while Miller added six boards as Grove City out-rebounded the Presidents 32-29. Grove City also forced 19 W&J turnovers.

Wenzell added a career-high five assists while Gebrosky had four assists. As a team, Grove City shot 41 percent (25 of 61) from the floor, including a 12-for-21 (57 percent) effort on three-pointers. W&J shot 55 percent (27 of 49) from the field for the game. Killeen led W&J with 24 points.

Grove City hosts Hiram Wednesday night in non-conference action at 7:30 p.m.
