Wolverines roll past Hiram
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team picked up a 60-36 victory over visiting Hiram (0-5) Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena. It is Grove City's second straight victory.
Grove City (3-4) led 34-21 at halftime and broke the game open with a 20-3 run to start the second half. Five different Wolverines scored during the run, which featured a pair of three-point goals from sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley).
Defensively, Grove City limited Hiram to just 15 points and five field goals in the second half. Grove City also forced 25 turnovers.
Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in a game-high 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting while Gebrosky added 11 points. Ten different players scored for the Wolverines in the win.
Grove City shot 26 of 64 (41 percent) from the field, including a 5-for-11 (45 percent) effort on three-point goals. The Wolverines also committed just 13 turnovers.
Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) distributed five assists while Slater added four assists. Junior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) grabbed seven rebounds for Grove City. Hiram owned a 39-37 edge on the glass.
Brittany Mayle led Hiram with eight points. The Terriers shot 31 percent (15 of 49) from the floor.
The teams had not played each other since the 2002-03 season. Hiram last visited Grove City December 14, 1999. The 36 points surrendered by the Wolverines is the lowest opponent total since a 40-36 win at Westminster December 6, 2008.
Grove City returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday at Waynesburg. Tip-off is 1:30 p.m.
