Grove City earns 3rd straight win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Three Grove City players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon to help lift the Wolverines to a 76-56 win at Waynesburg in Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at Rudy Marisa Field House.

Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) collected 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the win for the Wolverines (4-4, 2-1 PAC) while senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) tallied 15 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting as Grove City earned its third straight game.

Grove City led 36-32 at halftime and held a double-digit lead for much of the second half. Waynesburg closed to within 59-54 but Grove City closed the game on a 17-2 run over the final five minutes.

Senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and junior Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) sparked the game-ending run with consecutive layups. After a Slater basket, Miller extended the lead to 14 with her first three-point goal of the season.

Grove City shot 27 for 62 (44 percent) from the field and limited Waynesburg (2-4, 1-2 PAC) to a 19-for-53 (36 percent) effort. Waynesburg out-rebounded Grove City 37-35. Grove City forced the Yellow Jackets to commit 30 turnovers, however. Elisha Jones led Waynesburg with 16 points.

Grove City is off until facing Wittenberg December 29 in the semifinals of Wittenberg’s Zimmerman Classic.
