Cold shooting dooms Wolverines

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 4-5 overall Tuesday afternoon with a 54-36 setback at Wittenberg in the semifinals of Wittenberg's Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic at Pam Evans Smith Arena. The defeat snaps the Wolverines' three-game win streak.

Grove City shot just 26 percent (16 for 62) from the field in the game, including an 0-for-14 outing on three-point attempts. Wittenberg (4-4) held Grove City scoreless for nearly eight minutes during the middle portion of the first half and led 26-14 at halftime.

Wittenberg then opened the second half with an 8-0 run to break the game open.

Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led Grove City with nine points. Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds.

Stephanie Boardman led Wittenberg with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. Wittenberg owned a 44-36 edge on the glass. Each team had 21 turnovers. Wittenberg shot 22 of 54 (41 percent) from the field.

The game featured just 14 total free throws. Wittenberg went 6 for 8 at the foul line while Grove City made four of its six attempts. The Wolverines had not played in 17 days.

Grove City will face Wilmington in the consolation game Wednesday at noon. Wilmington fell to Case Western 68-66 in the other semifinal Tuesday.
