Wolverines fall in OT

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 66-59 overtime decision to host Thiel Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia. The Wolverines are now 4-2 in the PAC and 6-7 overall.

Thiel (4-8, 1-3 PAC) scored the final seven points of regulation to force overtime, then held Grove City without a field goal in the extra period. Grove City led 57-50 with 1:34 left after junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) intercepted a pass and scored. However, Thiel eventually cut the lead to 57-54 and after a Grove City offensive foul in the backcourt, Thiel center Kelly Barzak hit her first three-point goal of the season to tie the game with 15 seconds left.

Slater's potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer rimmed out, sending the game to overtime. In the overtime, Barzak scored with 2:50 left to put the Tomcats ahead to stay.

After trailing 28-24 at halftime, Grove City took the lead in the second half with a 10-0 run midway through the period. Freshman guard Brittany Wenzell (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) ignited the run with a layup. Wenzell hit a jumper to tie the game at 47 with 6:37 left. The Wolverines then took the lead moments later on a short jumper from senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland).

Beechy led Grove City with a season-high 16 points while Slater added a dozen points. Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) tossed in 10 points.

Slater pulled down eight rebounds to help the Wolverines earn a 37-30 edge on the glass. Grove City committed 20 turnovers while Thiel had just 14.

Grove City shot 38 percent (23 of 61) from the field while Thiel shot 46 percent (25 of 55). Barzak led Thiel with 19 points. Grove City is now 0-3 in overtime this year.

Grove City will host Geneva Wednesday at 6 p.m.
