Wolverines hold off Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team wrapped up the first half of the Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday night with a 72-66 victory over visiting Westminster in a conference clash at the Grove City College Arena.

Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in a career-high 28 points and also pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds for Grove City (8-8, 5-2 PAC). Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) poured in a career-high 18 points for Grove City.

Grove City closed the first half on a 13-4 run and led 39-26 at the break. Slater hit a pair of three-pointers in the spurt while freshman guard Brittany Wenzell (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) also drained a three-pointer. Gibson capped the half with a pair of free throws.

A Wenzell basket with 10 minutes left gave Grove City its biggest lead of the night, 59-40. Westminster (6-10, 4-3 PAC) eventually closed the gap to five in the closing moments but could draw no closer.

Grove City committed just 12 turnovers in the victory. The Wolverines also owned a 46-33 rebounding edge. Senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) pulled in nine rebounds. She also had a team-high three assists.

Grove City shot 22 of 61 (36 percent) from the floor. Westminster went 22 for 50 (44 percent). The Titans committed 17 turnovers.

Sam Higgins led Westminster with 16 points while Amy Dolsak added 12 points.

Grove City has won four straight meetings with Westminster. Grove City is one game behind conference co-leaders Thomas More and Washington & Jefferson (6-1 PAC). The Wolverines visit Thomas More Saturday at 1 p.m.
