Thomas More tops Grove City

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday as host Thomas More earned a 69-51 victory over Grove City in PAC action at the Connor Convocation Center.

Grove City (8-9 overall) led several times throughout the first half and trailed by just four, 33-29, at halftime. However, 14th-ranked Thomas More used an 11-2 run early in the second half to break the game open.

Grove City closed the gap to 49-42 midway through the second half on a three-pointer from freshman guard Brittany Wenzell (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay). Thomas More (15-2, 7-1) countered with a 9-0 blitz to retake control of the game.

Senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) fired in 15 points while classmate Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 11 points for the Wolverines.

Grove City shot 36 percent (21 of 58) from the field for the game. The Wolverines converted 13 of 28 (46 percent) first-half shots but made just eight of 30 (27 percent) shots over the final 20 minutes. Thomas More shot 45 percent (24 of 53) from the field. Chelsea Tolliver led Thomas More with 15 points while Nicole Dickman had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Grove City owned a 37-33 edge on the glass. Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Slater also scored eight points, giving her 980 career points. She added four steals.

Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) tallied a game-high four assists for the Wolverines.

Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in PAC play.
