Comeback falls short; Slater reaches 1,000

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 5-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 61-58 setback against No. 20 Washington & Jefferson (16-2, 7-1 PAC) in the Grove City College Arena.

Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in a game-high 24 points to become the 10th 1,000-point scorer in program history. She now has 1,004 career points.

Slater scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half as Grove City rallied from a 33-20 halftime hole to tie the game at 55 with three minutes left. Grove City trailed 59-58 in the final minute and had a chance to take its first lead of the second half. However, the Wolverines turned the ball over on each of their final three possessions of the game.

Grove City used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 55. Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) ignited the run with a layup while Slater followed with two foul shots. Junior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) scored in the paint and senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) knotted the game by hitting tow free throws.

W&J countered with back-to-back scores from Kennan Killeen and Maggie Gibson. Leah Gibson drained a three-point goal with 1:55 left to cut the W&J lead to 59-58.

Grove City charged back into the game with a 19-6 run early in the second half. Slater accounted for 15 of the points while Leah Gibson's layin at the 10-minute mark close the gap to 44-43. Grove City shot 14 for 23 (61 percent) from the field in the second half

W&J jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first half. The Presidents shot 48 percent (14 of 29) from the field in the first half. For the game, the Presidents went 24 for 55 (44 percent) from the field. Grove City finished 23 of 49 (47 percent).

Vanessa Rivera led W&J with 15 points. Maggie Gibson and Killeen each had 11 points. Gibson also had 11 rebounds. Slater led Grove City with 11 rebounds. Each team had 30 rebounds. Both teams went 2 for 9 on three-point attempts.

Leah Gibson added 10 points for Grove City. Senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) and sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) both had three assists.

Grove City (8-10) will host Waynesburg Saturday at 1 p.m. on Hall of Fame Day in the Grove City College Arena.
