Wolverines charge past Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 6-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by earning a 66-54 victory over visiting Waynesburg at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City used a pair of second-half runs to take command after the game after Waynesburg had erased the Wolverines' 27-19 halftime lead. Waynesburg led 33-29 with 15:30 left in the game but Grove City charged back with an 18-5 run. Sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) helped ignite the run with a jumper and two subsequent free throws.

Grove City took a 37-35 lead at the 13:00 mark on a putback by junior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille). Waynesburg inched back ahead on a three-point goal by Johnna Deco but Grove City took the lead for good on the next possession as junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) scored off an offensive rebound.

Slater scored eight straight points during the run, which Wells capped with a layup midway through the half.

Waynesburg eventually closed to within 55-52 with five minutes left but Grove City held the Yellow Jackets (6-13, 3-7) without a field goal the rest of the way. Sophomore forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) drained a pair of free throws and Gebrosky added a three-point play to help Grove City pull away.

Senior forwards Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) both added baskets to help sew up the victory.

Slater poured in 26 points on 12-of-15 shooting for Grove City while Gebrosky added 11 points. Beechy and Wells both had eight points with Beechy recording a team-high 10 rebounds.

Beechy, Slater and freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) all had four assists each for Grove City.

Grove City shot 28 of 55 (51 percent) from the field, including a 16-for-26 (62 percent) effort in the second half. Waynesburg converted 17 of 54 (32 percent) attempts from the field. Grove City owned a 35-31 edge in rebounds.

Elisha Jones led Waynesburg with 16 points while Hannah Hunter and Morgan Hoone both had 10 points. Waynesburg committed 22 turnovers.

Grove City has won six straight games against Waynesburg and 16 consecutive over the Yellow Jackets in the Grove City College Arena. Grove City is now 6-2 at home. Slater now has 1,030 career points, 10th-most in program history.

Grove City hosts conference foe Chatham Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
