Grove City charges past Geneva, 62-48

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 12-11 overall Saturday night as the Wolverines earned a 62-48 win over longtime rival Geneva in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members at Geneva's Metheney Field House.

Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in 20 points to pace Grove City while senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) each poured in 14 points.

Grove City quickly took control of the game by jumping out to a 19-5 lead. Gibson started a 9-0 run during that stretch with a three-point play while Slater and sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) each hit consecutive three-point goals. The lead later swelled to 28-11 with seven minutes left in the half on a jumper by Gebrosky.

Geneva (8-15) closed the lead to 33-20 by halftime and eventually pulled to within 42-32 five minutes into the second half. Grove City countered with an 8-0 blitz which Gibson sparked with a three-pointer. Grove City maintained that double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

The Wolverines shot 23 of 63 (37 percent) from the floor and limited Geneva to a 17-for-51 (33 percent) effort. Grove City owned a 46-32 edge in rebounding. Miller, Slater and senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) all had a game-high nine rebounds for the Wolverines. Grove City had 22 offensive rebounds. Miller also had four assists and three steals.

Slater is now eighth all-time at Grove City with 1,101 career points. Her 649 career rebounds rank fourth in College annals.

Alyse Scarsella led Geneva with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Saturday's game does not count in the conference standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III

Grove City will host Saint Vincent Wednesday at 6 p.m. in conference action. Saint Vincent is also a provisional member of NCAA Division III.
