Grove City falls despite balanced effort

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College women's basketball players scored in double figures Tuesday night but the Wolverines dropped a 63-54 decision to visiting Chatham in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Grove City College Arena.

Sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) fired in a team-high 14 points while freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) recorded a dozen points. Senior forwards Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) and Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) both tossed in 10 points. Beechy also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Grove City (12-14), the No. 3 seed, led 26-23 at halftime. However, sixth-seeded Chatham (11-15) opened the second half on a 17-4 run. Courtney Smith and Lizz King opened the run with consecutive three-pointers while Marguerite Sargent closed the run with a layup.

Grove City cut the lead to 44-40 with 7:19 left on a Gibson jumper. The Wolverines could get no closer, though, as Chatham limited Grove City to two field goals over the next six minutes.

Chatham shot 60 percent (12 of 20) from the floor in the second half. Grove City made just nine of 32 (28 percent) attempts over the final 20 minutes. For the game, Grove City shot 18 of 55 (33 percent) while Chatham converted 22 of 48 (46 percent) shots.

Brittany Brown led Chatham with 19 points and eight rebounds while Kayla Hilko had 14 points. King finished with 13 points. Both teams had 35 rebounds. Chatham committed 21 turnovers while Grove City had 20.

It is Chatham's first-ever PAC Tournament win. The Cougars will face top-seeded Thomas More Friday night. Grove City defeated Chatham twice in the regular season. The teams had not met in the postseason prior to Tuesday's game.
