Wolverines drop opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season Tuesday night with a 79-53 setback against visiting Allegheny in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Allegheny asserted control of the game by going on an 18-2 run in the first half. The Gators led by as many as 19 in the first half before Grove City trimmed the lead to 38-21 by halftime.

Grove City eventually closed to within 44-34 just five minutes into the second half as sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) recorded a three-point play and senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) followed with a layup. However, Allegheny used a 17-6 run to break the game open.

Gibson led Grove City with 16 points while freshman forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Slater added nine points.

Senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) pulled in eight rebounds for the Wolverines. Grove City shot 38 percent (21 of 56) from the field for the game while Allegheny shot 44 percent (32 of 73).

Jill Gregory led Allegheny with 16 points and Erica Resitch added 13 points. Allegheny owned a 45-38 edge on the glass. Grove City committed 22 turnovers while Allegheny had 15 turnovers.

Grove City is now 5-6 in its last 11 season openers. The Wolverines will face Sage College Friday at 4 p.m. in the semifinals of the Buffalo State Tournament.
