Wolverines drop title game

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 65-55 decision to host Buffalo State Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Betty Abgott Invitational at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in a game-high 20 points for the Wolverines (1-2) while junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) pumped in 15 points. Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 13 points.

Gebrosky scored consecutive field goals in the first half for Grove City, helping the Wolverines take their largest lead of the game at 20-16. However, Buffalo State (3-0) countered with an 11-0 run and took the lead for good.

Grove City shot 42 percent (21 of 50) from the floor. The Wolverines held Buffalo State to a 21-for-58 (36 percent) effort from the field. Buffalo State did outrebound Grove City 40-32. Freshman Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) led Grove City with six rebounds. Senior Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) handed out a career-high five assists. Slater and Leah Gibson each had three assists.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Staci McElroy led Buffalo State with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Slater and Gebrosky both earned All-Tournament recognition.

Grove City will visit Carnegie Mellon Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
