Grove City rallies for road win

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team evened its overall record at 2-2 Tuesday night by coming from behind for a 64-60 road victory over non-conference rival Carnegie Mellon at historic Skibo Gymnasium.

Grove City trailed 8-0 early and fell behind by as many as 11 points in the first half. Grove City did not lead until embarking on a 10-0 run midway through the second half.

Carnegie Mellon (1-3) led 43-37 with 14 minutes remaining but freshman Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) and sophomore Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) hit consecutive three-pointers to tie the game. The Wolverines then moved ahead on a layup from junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley).

Grove City's lead eventually swelled to eight, 55-47, as senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) buried a jumper. Slater posted a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Wolverines and Gibson added 19 points.

Defensively, Grove City held Carnegie Mellon without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the second half. For the game, Grove City limited the Tartans to 30 percent (21 of 69) shooting from the field, including a 9-for-33 (27 percent) effort in the second half. Grove City converted 22 of 50 (44 percent) field goal attempts.

The Wolverines also outrebounded CMU 42-39. Senior guard Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) grabbed nine rebounds. Gebrosky tallied seven assists and Gibson had three steals.

Jacki Cortese led Carnegie Mellon with 17 points. CMU led 35-32 at halftime.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play next Wednesday, December 1, at Thomas More. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
