Wolverines hand Hiram first loss
HIRAM, Ohio -- Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a career-high 28 points Wednesday night and senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) added 22 points and 11 rebounds to help lift the Grove City College women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 74-63 win at Hiram (4-1) in non-conference action at Price Gymnasium.
Hiram led by as many as six in the first half but Grove City forged a 30-30 tie by halftime as Gibson hit three three-point goals in the final 1:09 of the first half. She finished with a career-high five three-pointers.
Grove City (3-4) took the lead for good with 5:48 left when senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) connected on a jumper that put the Wolverines ahead 55-54. Slater followed with a layup and freshman forward Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) capped the spurt with a three-point play.
The Wolverines then went 9 for 10 at the foul line in the final minute to seal the win.
Wells finished with eight points and eight rebounds and Gibson also grabbed seven boards to help Grove City own a 50-29 advantage on the glass. Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) handed out a career-high seven assists. Slater tallied four assists.
Grove City had 20 assists on 24 field goals. The Wolverines shot 24 of 55 (44 percent) from the floor, including a 13-for-25 effort (52 percent) in the second half.
Senior Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) added nine points. The 74 points are a season-high for Grove City and the most for the program since a 76-56 win at Waynesburg December 12, 2009.
Tiffany Shields led Hiram with 22 points. Hiram shot 35 percent (23 of 66) from the floor.
Grove City will host Waynesburg Saturday at 1 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
