Wolverines rally to hand Waynesburg first loss
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team rallied from a 32-24 halftime deficit Saturday afternoon to earn a 65-63 home victory over previously-unbeaten Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (4-4, 1-2 PAC) opened the second half with a 13-2 run that featured three-pointers from sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center). During the spurt, senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) drained a pair of free throws two minutes into the second half to give the Wolverines their first lead of the half, 33-32.
Senior guard Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) pushed Grove City's lead to 47-40 with a jumper at the 12:41 mark. She then assisted a layup by freshman Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) that gave the Wolverines a nine-point lead.
Waynesburg (6-1, 2-1 PAC) eventually claimed a 63-62 lead with one minute left on a jumper by Brittany Spencer. Wells, Leah Gibson and Slater all split a pair of free throws in the final 38 seconds to help the Wolverines pull out the win.
Slater fired in a game-high 24 points while Leah Gibson posted 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Wells added nine points.
Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) dished out five assists while both Leah and Megan Gibson each had three assists.
Spencer led Waynesburg with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Elisha Jones added 15 points and went over the 1,000-point mark for her career. Waynesburg owned a 43-30 edge on the glass. Waynesburg had 16 offensive rebounds.
Grove City shot 40 percent (20 of 50) from the floor. Waynesburg also shot 40 percent (23 of 58). Each team had 16 turnovers.
Grove City has won 17 straight home games against Waynesburg. Slater moved into fourth place on Grove City's all-time scoring list with 1,271 career points.
The Wolverines host Denison Tuesday night in non-conference action.
