Wolverines hold off Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) tied a career high with 28 points and senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) fired in a career-high 18 points Thursday night to help lift the Grove City College women's basketball team to a 66-59 win over host Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Hummel Field House.

Grove City (5-5, 2-2 PAC) closed the game on a 7-0 run over the final 1:27 of the game. Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) broke a 59-59 tie by hitting a pair of free throws. After a pair of Bethany misfires, Slater hit four straight foul shots in the final minute to extend the lead.

Senior Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) sealed the win by splitting a pair of free throws with six seconds left.

Wells scored 10 points in the first five minutes of the game to help the Wolverines bolt to a 14-3 lead. Bethany (6-6, 1-3 PAC) eventually tied the game at 26 but Grove City closed the first half with a 7-0 spurt. Slater put back her own miss to start the run while Wells added a pair of baskets.

The Wolverines' lead swelled to 15, 47-32, with 14:49 left but Bethany rattled off 12 straight points. The Bison eventually tied the game at 55 on a Tara Harris three-point goal.

Harris and Anne Wilson led Bethany with 11 points each. Renee Shepherd had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Johnston grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Grove City, helping the Wolverines own a 37-36 edge on the glass.

Grove City shot 44 percent (24 of 55) from the field while holding Bethany to 37 percent (22 of 60) shooting.

Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) handed out five assists for the Wolverines. Gibson had four assists. The Wolverines had 17 assists and just 11 turnovers. The Wolverines forced Bethany into 16 turnovers.

Grove City will host conference foe Thiel Saturday at 1 p.m.
