Grove City clips Thiel

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by earning a 68-61 home victory over Thiel at the Grove City College Arena.

Four Grove City players scored in double figures, led by senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) with 25 points. Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 14 points while senior Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) and junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) each scored 10.

Wells also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to earn her first career double-double.

Grove City (6-5 overall) fell behind in the opening moments but quickly bolted to a 19-9 lead midway through the first half. Thiel (2-11, 1-4 PAC) eventually cut the lead to 23-22 but the Wolverines extended their lead to 35-28 by halftime.

Thiel pulled to within 55-54 with four minutes left but Grove City senior Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) scored a three-point play to spark a 7-2 spurt. Wells added consecutive baskets to give Grove City a 62-56 lead with 1:35 left.

Grove City shot 44 percent (28 of 63) from the field and owned a 41-37 edge in rebounds. Slater added six rebounds and five assists.

Thiel shot 38 percent (25 of 66) from the field. The Tomcats also featured four double-digit scorers. Kelly Muffley and Ashley Davis both scored 14 points while Kelly Barzak and Jasmin Jones each recorded a dozen points. Davis led Thiel with 11 rebounds.

Slater moved into third place on Grove City's all-time scoring list. She now has 1,343 points and needs five points to take over second place on the list.

Grove City hosts PAC foe Chatham Monday at 7 p.m.
