Wolverines win 3rd straight
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 4-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by earning a 62-46 win over visiting Chatham Monday night in conference action at the Grove City College Arena. It is Grove City's third win in a five-day span.
Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a game-high 23 points to pace the Wolverines (7-5) and senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) added 15 points. Slater moved into second place on Grove City's all-time scoring list with 1,358 career points.
Grove City led 23-21 at halftime and maintained the lead throughout the second half. Chatham had pulled back to within 36-34 but Grove City opened up the game with an 8-2 run. Senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) and senior guard Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) both hit jumpers during the spurt while Leah Gibson added a layup.
Slater closed the run by converting a pair of free throws.
The Wolverines then sealed the win with a 13-0 run down the stretch. Slater hit a jumper with 1:49 left to give Grove City its biggest lead of the night, 62-43.
Grove City shot 50 percent (13 of 26) from the field in the second half while holding Chatham to a 9-for-34 (27 percent) effort over the final 20 minutes. For the game, Grove City shot 42 percent (22 of 53). Chatham shot 28 percent overall (17 of 61).
Grove City also owned a 42-36 rebound edge. Slater grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds. Wells contributed three blocked shots.
Sonjia Hoston and Carly Zelenak each scored nine points for Chatham (5-8, 1-4 PAC).
Grove City has won five of its last six overall. The Wolverines will visit Geneva Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
