Fourth win in six days
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team captured its fourth victory in the last six days Wednesday night by rolling to a 75-54 victory over host Geneva (7-7) at Metheny Field House. The Wolverines have now won six straight against Geneva.
Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) fired in a team-high 19 points for Grove City, including five three-point goals. Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) added 18 points and sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) recorded 16 points for the Wolverines (8-5).
Grove City fell behind 16-6 in the first half but surged ahead with a 17-3 run over the final eight minutes of the period. Gebrosky and Slater hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Grove City a 30-26 lead -- the Wolverines' first advantage of the game. Senior Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) drained a jumper and Gibson followed with two free throws to give Grove City its largest lead of the half, 34-26.
Grove City led 34-29 at halftime but the lead quickly swelled to double digits as two Gebrosky three-pointers fueled an 8-2 run. Geneva eventually cut the lead back to single digits at 60-51 with 4:48 left. However, sophomore Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) ignited a game-ending 15-3 run for the Wolverines with a backdoor layup.
Grove City shot 48 percent (28 of 59) from the field while holding Geneva to a 20-for-57 (35 percent) effort. Geneva went 6 for 13 on three-pointers in the first half but missed all 13 three-point attempts in the second half.
Wells had seven rebounds and Slater grabbed six boards to help Grove City own a 39-31 edge on the glass. Leah Gibson had four assists while senior Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) and freshman Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) both had three assists each.
Christine Carugati led Geneva with 19 points.
Grove City will host Saint Vincent Saturday at 1 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
