Upset bid falls short
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 64-56 setback against No. 25 Saint Vincent (14-1, 7-0 PAC) in the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City led 50-42 with 12:50 remaining but Saint Vincent closed the game on a 22-6 run. Saint Vincent held the Wolverines scoreless for over six minutes during the stretch.
Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) led Grove City with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double while sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 15 points and five assists.
Grove City trailed 22-16 with four minutes remaining in the first half but the Wolverines finished the period with a 12-1 run. Gibson and Slater each scored six points during the run. A Gibson layup gave Grove City a 24-23 lead with 1:42 left in the half.
A Gibson three-pointer with 12:50 left gave Grove City the 50-42 lead. Saint Vincent reclaimed the lead with 6:56 left on a Caty Kumar three-point goal.
Grove City shot 44 percent (19 of 43) from the field for the game. Defensively, the Wolverines limited Saint Vincent to a 22-for-66 (33 percent) shooting performance from the floor. Saint Vincent committed just eight turnovers, however, while also forcing 24 Grove City miscues.
Saint Vincent owned a 37-36 rebound edge. The Bearcats collected 21 offensive rebounds. Brittany Sedlock led Saint Vincent with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Grove City had won four straight games prior to Saturday's setback. The Wolverines will host Mount Union Monday at 6 p.m. in non-conference action.
