Cold 2nd half dooms Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 8-7 Monday night as visiting Mount Union (13-2) rallied for a 65-43 non-conference victory over the Wolverines in the Grove City College Arena.

Mount Union, ranked No. 18 in the most recent D3Hoops.com national poll, closed the game on a 25-2 run over the final 12 minutes. Grove City went 1 for 12 from the field during that stretch and shot 26 percent (6 of 23) from the floor in the second half overall.

Grove City led 31-24 at halftime and held the lead for the first seven minutes of the second half. Mount Union's Katie Crider put the Raiders ahead 40-39 with a three-pointer but senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) put Grove City ahead with a jumper at the 12:29 mark.

However, Mount Union took the lead for good on another Crider three with 12 minutes left.

Grove City closed the first half on a 9-2 run that senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) ignited with a pair of baskets. Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) capped the run with a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first half.

Slater led all scorers with 21 points. She also had a game-high eight rebounds. Leah Gibson and Wells both had six points, as did senior guard Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars). Leah Gibson recorded five assists. The Wolverines shot 36 percent (18 of 50) from the field for the game.

Mount Union converted 26 of 64 (41 percent) field goal attempts. Crider led the Purple Raiders with 13 points. Lauren Forquer added a dozen points. Mount Union owned a 37-35 rebound edge.

Grove City visits Westminster Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
