Wolverines stop Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Four Grove City players scored in double figures Wednesday night to help lead the Wolverines to a 66-57 victory over host Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Memorial Field House.

Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in 17 points while senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) recorded 14 points. Senior guard Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) pumped in 11 points and junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added 10 points.

Grove City pulled ahead for good midway through the second half by embarking on a 10-2 run. Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) broke a 44-44 tie by hitting a three-pointer, igniting the run. A Megan Gibson layup pushed the lead to 52-46 and moments later, Slater drilled a jumper to give the Wolverines a 54-46 lead with 6:09 left.

Westminster (4-12, 0-8 PAC) pulled to within 56-52 but Megan Gibson, Slater and Wells scored consecutive baskets to help seal the win.

Megan Gibson's three-point play with five minutes left in the first half gave Grove City a 26-24 lead. Leah Gibson and Gebrosky hit threes down the stretch in the first half to give Grove City a 36-30 halftime lead.

Grove City (9-7, 5-3 PAC) shot 45 percent (24 of 53) from the field for the game. The Wolverines held Westminster to a 20-of-58 (34 percent) shooting performance for the game, including a 7-for-28 effort in the second half. Grove City owned a 38-33 rebounding edge. Slater had nine rebounds and Wells pulled in eight. Slater added four assists.

Emily Dolsak led Westminster with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Grove City will host No. 2 Thomas More Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first game of the second half of the conference schedule. The Wolverines have won seven of their last 10 games.
