Cold start plagues Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 5-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday with a 51-31 setback against No. 2 Thomas More (17-0, 9-0 PAC) in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (9-8 overall) opened the game by making just one of its first 24 shot attempts from the field. The cold start allowed Thomas More to jump out to a 24-2 lead. The Saints led 28-8 at halftime.

Grove City pulled to within 14, 37-23, with nine minutes remaining on a layup by freshman forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist). However, the Saints then countered with a 7-0 run to seal the win.

For the game, Grove City shot 19 percent (12 of 62) from the field. Defensively, the Wolverines limited Thomas More to 35 percent (18 of 52) shooting from the floor. Grove City also forced 20 Thomas More turnovers.

Sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led Grove City with nine points. Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) added five points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) pulled in nine rebounds. Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had five assists.

Chelsea Tolliver led Thomas More with 10 points. Katie Kees added nine points and nine rebounds. Thomas More owned a 49-40 edge in rebounds.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Wednesday at 6 p.m. in conference action.
