Grove City storms past W&J
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead early and never trailed en route to a 63-55 victory over host Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Center.
Grove City (10-8, 6-4 PAC) broke the game open with a 23-5 run in the first half as the Wolverines' lead swelled to 36-15. Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center), freshman forward Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock), junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) all hit three-point goals during the run for the Wolverines.
Senior Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) closed the run with a putback at the 6:30 mark of the first half.
Grove City shot 17 of 28 (61 percent) from the field in the first half and led 42-25 at the intermission.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 22, 52-30, in the second half. W&J pulled to within 58-47 but Gibson hit a three-pointer and Slater drained a jumper to help ward off the comeback.
Slater led all scorers with 23 points. She also pulled in a game-high seven rebounds. Gebrosky fired in 11 points while Gibson had nine points and eight assists. Senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) set a new single-game school record with eight blocked shots.
For the game, Grove City shot 25 of 49 (51 percent) from the field. The Wolverines also owned a 33-28 edge in rebounds. W&J (8-10, 5-4 PAC) shot 38 percent (22 of 58) from the field. Courtney Walsh led W&J with 15 points.
Grove City has won two straight games in the Henry Center. The Wolverines are now alone in third place in the conference at 6-4, ahead of both W&J and Waynesburg (5-4 PAC). Grove City will visit Waynesburg Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in conference action.
