Comeback falls short

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team erased a 14-point halftime deficit but could not pull out a win over visiting Bethany Saturday afternoon as the Bison escaped the Grove City College Arena with a 69-65 win in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

Bethany (11-10, 6-6 PAC) pushed its lead to 44-28 early in the second half but Grove City surged ahead with a 19-2 run. Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) scored 13 of her career-high 31 points during the run. Her three-pointer with 10:54 left put Grove City ahead 47-46.

However, Bethany reclaimed the lead on its next possession as Tara Harris drained a three-point goal. Harris hit two free throws on Bethany's subsequent possession, extending the lead to 51-47.

Slater hit three three-pointers in the final 35 seconds to pull Grove City to within 67-65. Bethany guard Anne Wilson sewed up the win by sinking two free throws with 4.4 seconds left, though.

Bethany jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first half and led by as many as 16, 35-19, in the first half. The Bison shot 16 of 30 (53 percent) from the field in the first half. For the game, Bethany converted 25 of 53 (47 percent) attempts from the field. Grove City, meanwhile, went 24 for 60 (40 percent).

Junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added 13 points and five assists for Grove City (10-11, 6-7 PAC). Slater had a team-leading nine rebounds. Each team had 36 rebounds.

Kayla Taormina led Bethany with 20 points. Harris fashioned a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double. Katelynn Hackathorn added 13 points.

Grove City won the first meeting at Bethany January 6, 66-59.

Slater moved into 10th place all-time in the conference with 1,523 career points. She is the second Grove City player to go over 1,500 points.

The Wolverines visit Thiel Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
