Grove City blasts Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team forced 22 turnovers and held visiting Geneva to just 27 percent (14 of 51) shooting from the field Saturday afternoon as the host Wolverines rolled to a 60-38 win over Geneva in the Grove City College Arena on Hall of Fame Day. Grove City has won seven straight games against Geneva.

Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fired in 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Grove City, recording her sixth double-double of the season.

Senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) and junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) both fired in 11 points each. Wells also blocked five shots.

Grove City (12-11) broke open the game in the second half with a 30-8 run. Geneva (8-15) had cut Grove City's 26-20 halftime lead down to one, 28-27, but a three-pointer from Slater and a Wells three-point play helped ignite the run. Senior guard Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) drained a jumper with 8:51 left to push the lead to 48-33.

A putback by freshman forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) and a Slater jumped capped the outburst.

Gebrosky hit a three-pointer at the end of the first half to give Grove City its 26-20 halftime lead.

Johnston added 10 rebounds for Grove City, helping the Wolverines own a 42-35 edge on the glass. Grove City shot 24 of 61 (39 percent) from the field for the game, including a 15-for-31 effort in the second half. Sophomore Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) handed out a game-high four assists.

Christine Carugati led Geneva with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Slater is ninth all-time in Presidents' Athletic Conference history with 1,565 career points. Saturday's game does not count in the conference standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City visits Saint Vincent Wednesday at 6 p.m. in conference action.
