Wolverines stop Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team wrapped up the 2010-2011 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 61-57 victory over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena. The Wolverines are 13-12 overall and finish conference play with an 8-8 mark.

Senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) paced Grove City with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double while senior forward Alison Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) recorded 12 points.

Grove City never trailed in the game after jumping out to a 9-2 lead. The Wolverines led 35-28 at halftime and then broke the game open with an 11-2 run at the outset of the second half.

Slater ignited the run with a three-pointer while Wells and senior Jenna Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) followed with field goals. Slater capped the spurt with consecutive baskets, giving Grove City a 46-30 lead.

The lead swelled to 51-34 with 8:18 left when junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded a steal and subsequent layup.

Westminster (7-18, 2-14 PAC) pulled to within 59-52 in the final minute but senior guard Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) helped seal the win with two free throws.

Grove City shot 23 of 58 (40 percent) from the field. Westminster also went 23 of 58 (40 percent). Grove City had just 10 turnovers while Westminster had 13 turnovers.

Courtney Zitt and Katie Hughes each had 12 points for Westminster. Westminster owned a 39-35 rebound edge. Gebrosky had a game-high seven assists for Grove City.

Prior to the game, Grove City recognized Gibson, Johnston, senior Inge Rasmussen (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville), Slater and Wells as part of Senior Day festivities.

Grove City will be the No. 5 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines will visit No. 4 Bethany Tuesday at 6 p.m.
