Thomas More tops Grove City

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 66-54 decision to No. 1 Thomas More (27-0) Friday night in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Connor Convocation Center.

The Wolverines (14-13) trailed 21-8 early but surged ahead with a 15-0 run during the latter portion of the first half. Senior Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) helped ignite the run with a jumper and sophomore guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) followed with consecutive three-point baskets.

Grove City then took a 23-21 lead with three minutes left when junior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) drilled a three-pointer.

Thomas More rebounded to take a 25-23 lead at the half. The Saints then opened the second half on a 27-7 run over the first 10 minutes of the period. Grove City closed to within 63-50 with three minutes left on a jumper by senior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) but Thomas More kept the Wolverines at bay.

Slater scored Grove City's final 15 points and finished with a game-high 24 points. Leah Gibson added 12 points. Grove City shot 39 percent (19 of 49) from the floor for the game.

Chelsea Tolliver led Thomas More with 12 points. Allison Long chipped in 11. The Saints shot 27 of 53 (51 percent) from the field, including a 16-of-27 (59 percent) effort in the second half. Thomas More also owned a 34-25 edge in rebounds. Slater led all players with nine rebounds.

Gebrosky added three assists and Megan Gibson had three steals.

Thomas More will face No. 2 seed Saint Vincent in Saturday's final at 5 p.m. Saint Vincent downed No. 3 Waynesburg in the first semifinal Friday, 70-53.

Grove City has secured its first winning season since 2004-05. The Wolverines will be under consideration for a berth in next week's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Tournament. Those invitations will be meted out Monday evening.
