Grove City 69, Penn State Behrend 59

January 9, 1999--
Home from a two-game stretch in Colorado, the Grove City Lady Wolverines strung together two victories for the first time this season with a 69-59 triumph over the Penn State Behrend Lady Lions.

Three Lady Wolverines reached double-figures in the scorebook, led by Karin Hendrickson’s (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) 20-point outburst. Hendrickson pulled down seven rebounds and handed out six assists, while shooting 7-for-10 from the field.

"She shot the ball well today," Lady Wolverine coach Melissa Lamie said. "She played with confidence. This is how she is capable of playing every night."

In her first career start, freshman point guard Stephanie Murphy (Munroe Falls, OH/Stow-Munroe Falls) rifled in 10 points, including a pair of second half three-pointers which bolstered Grove City’s 33-29 halftime lead. Murphy started in place of classmate T.L. Thompson (Girard, PA/Girard), whose playing time was limited due to muscle pains in her back.

"Steph hit some big, big shots," Lamie said. "She played well today. I’m very happy with how she played." Murphy added five assists, as the Lady Wolverines had 17 dishes as a team.

Livia Wright (Economy, PA/Ambridge) came off the bench to add 11 points and six rebounds. Wright shot 5-of-9 from the field in the game, aiding Grove City’s 50% first-half shooting. Grove City held Penn State Behrend to 38% marksmanship (21-of-55) from the floor.

"I thought we played very good half-court defense," Lamie said. "Our whole team focused on coming out strong."

Grove City’s 43 rebounds were a season-high, as was the 69-point output. The Lady Wolverines coerced 21 Lady Lion turnovers and limited the visitors to 3-of-17 shooting from behind the arc.

Grove City returns to action Tuesday evening against Carnegie Mellon. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm. The Lady Wolverines open conference action next Saturday against visiting Bethany.
