Grove City falls to CMU

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team shot just 26 percent (18 of 70) from the field Tuesday night while dropping a 73-43 decision to visiting Carnegie Mellon in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Carnegie Mellon (2-1) stormed out to a 28-6 lead but the Wolverines eventually slashed the lead to 38-28 by halftime. However, the Wolverines converted just 7 of 36 (19 percent) field goal attempts in the second half. Meanwhile, CMU shot 52 percent (14 of 27) from the field while taking command of the game.

Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led Grove City (1-3) with 10 points. Senior forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) added eight points and freshman forward Kelsey Whaley (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) chipped in seven.

Emily Peel led Carnegie Mellon with 16 points and 14 rebounds. MacKenzie Boyd and Gabrielle West both had 14 points each.

Caldwell led Grove City with six rebounds. CMU outrebounded Grove City 48-33. The Wolverines had just 11 turnovers. Gibson and freshman Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) both had three assists.

Grove City will host Bethany November 30 at 6 p.m. in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
