Wolverines top Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon by pulling away for a 48-36 home victory over Geneva at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City held Geneva without a field goal for the final 7:22 of the game while sealing the victory with an 8-0 run. Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) ignited the run with back-to-back layups and freshman forward Kelsey Whaley (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) followed with a layup.

Freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) capped the spurt by hitting two free throws with 21 seconds left. Gibson led all scorers with 23 points and Shirey added 11 for the Wolverines.

Grove City jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first half before a prolonged drought allowed Geneva to claim the lead three minutes into the second half. The Wolverines went over 11 minutes without a field goal until a Shirey layup with 16 minutes left. Shirey hit a jumper with 11:16 left to put Grove City ahead to stay.

Defensively, the Wolverines limited Geneva to a 5-for-27 (18 percent) shooting effort from the field in the second half. For the game, Geneva shot 25 percent (14 of 56). Grove City went 19 of 55 (34 percent) from the floor.

Sophomore forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) added eight points, a team-high seven rebounds and four blocks for Grove City. Gibson and Coneby both had three steals. Geneva owned a 41-39 edge on the glass. Geneva committed 19 turnovers and Grove City (2-6, 1-3 PAC) turned over the ball 16 times.

Beth DeLuca led Geneva (1-7, 0-4 PAC) with 17 points.

Grove City will visit Denison Tuesday night in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
