Comeback falls short at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 64-57 decision at NAIA member Houghton Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Grove City nearly erased a 13-point deficit over the final three minutes, pulling to within three, 58-55, in the final minute before the Highlanders (6-4) sealed the win.

Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) paced Grove City with 14 points and freshman forward Kelsey Whaley (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) added eight points. Freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) pulled in a team-leading seven rebounds and also had four assists. Senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Grove City with five assists.

The Wolverines shot 19 for 49 (39 percent) from the field for the game while limiting Houghton to a 21-of-56 (38 percent) shooting effort. Houghton did convert six of its 12 three-point attempts while Grove City went 5 of 14 on three-pointers. Houghton owned a 41-32 edge in rebounds. Grove City had 17 turnovers and the Highlanders committed 16 turnovers.

Kristen Moose led Houghton with 18 points. Houghton led 31-23 at halftime.

Grove City opens the new calendar year Wednesday at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
