Grove City rolls past Chatham

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by earning a 62-36 win over host Chatham in conference action at the Chatham Center.

Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 23 points to pace the Wolverines while sophomore forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) pumped in 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Junior forward Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Grove City hit nine of its first 14 shots in the game and bolted to a 20-7 lead. The Wolverines eventually extended the lead to 36-20 by halftime.

Chatham (2-10, 0-6 PAC) opened the second half with a 10-2 run, slashing the Grove City lead to 38-30. However, Grove City broke open the game with a 14-2 run. Maust ignited the run with a layup while Gibson scored eight points in the spurt. Freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) hit a pair of free throws and Coneby capped the run with a basket.

During the run, Grove City held Chatham without a field goal for nearly eight minutes.

Shirey added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds for Grove City. Senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) distributed a team-high four assists while Gibson and Shirey each had three assists. Gibson also had five steals.

Grove City outrebounded the Cougars 44-37. The Wolverines shot 26 of 63 (41 percent) from the floor while holding Chatham to a 10-for-43 (23 percent) effort. Grove City limited Chatham to just four second-half field goals. The Wolverines also forced 27 turnovers.

Marguerite Sargent led Chatham with 11 points.

Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson Wednesday at 6 p.m. in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
