Wolverines rally past W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 3-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by rallying for a 68-65 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson (7-7, 2-5) in the Grove City College Arena. The win is Grove City's first at home against W&J since February 2, 1999 -- a span of 12 games.

Grove City trailed 60-59 with two minutes left but the Wolverines surged ahead for good with a 6-0 spurt. Senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) put Grove City ahead with a jumper and then added a layup off an out-of-bounds play on the Wolverines' next possession, pushing the lead to 63-60.

Sophomore forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) extended the lead to five by hitting two free throws with a minute left. W&J's Vanessa Rivera cut the gap to 65-62 with a layup but after an exchange of possessions, Grove City freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) sealed the win by hitting two foul shots with 13 seconds left.

Four Grove City players scored in double figures. Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a game-high 17 points while Gebrosky finished with 16. Junior Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) poured in a career-high 12 points and Coneby fashioned a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.

W&J led by six on three different occasions in the second half. The Presidents led 52-46 with nine minutes left but Grove City countered with a 9-0 run. Senior forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) ignited the run with a pair of free throws while Gibson's layup with 8:16 left trimmed the lead to 52-50.

Gebrosky followed with a go-ahead three-point goal and Gibson capped the run with a jumper.

Grove City shot 46 percent (23 of 50) from the field while holding W&J to 25-of-67 (37 percent) shooting. W&J outrebounded Grove City 40-36. Gebrosky added seven rebounds and Shirey grabbed six boards. Gebrosky, Gibson and Shirey all had three assists each.

Blair Cotton led W&J with 15 points. The Presidents went 11 of 21 (52 percent) at the foul line while Grove City converted 17 of 23 (74 percent) free throw attempts. Grove City led 30-28 at halftime.

Grove City (4-10 overall) will visit Waynesburg Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in conference action.
