Cold shooting foils upset bid

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 66-52 home decision to Presidents' Athletic Conference co-leader Thomas More (14-4, 10-1 PAC) Wednesday night in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City trailed by only five, 50-45, with eight minutes remaining but Thomas More blanked the Wolverines over the next five minutes. During that span, the Saints extended their lead with a 9-2 run.

Grove City limited Thomas More to just 6-of-21 (29 percent) shooting from the floor in the second half. However, Grove City also shot just 29 percent (8 for 28) in the second half. For the game, Grove City went 16 for 58 (28 percent) from the field.

Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in a team-leading 17 points for Grove City while sophomore forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Gibson, freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) and sophomore forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) all had three assists. Shirey also had four steals.

Katie Kitchen led Thomas More with 18 points while Allison Long added 16. Thomas More shot 38 percent (20 of 53) from the field for the game. The Saints also had a 47-35 advantage in rebounds.

Grove City turned over the ball 15 times and Thomas More committed 14 turnovers. Thomas More led 35-29 at halftime.

Grove City (4-14, 3-8) will host the conference's other co-leader, Saint Vincent (15-3, 10-1), Saturday at 1 p.m.
