W&J slips past Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team had its three-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as host Washington & Jefferson rallied for a 74-67 win over the visiting Wolverines in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Center.

Grove City led by as many as 11, 45-34, in the second half before W&J forged a 59-59 tie. The Presidents then took the lead for good with three minutes left on consecutive layups by senior guard Blair Cotton. W&J outscored Grove City 19-8 over the final five minutes of the game.

Senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Grove City with a career-high 21 points, including five three-point goals. Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) fired in 17 points and freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) added 10 points.

Grove City shot 39 percent (23 of 59) from the field for the game, including a 10-for-24 (42 percent) effort on three-pointers. W&J went 21 for 52 (40 percent) from the floor.

Vanessa Rivera led W&J (11-12, 6-10 PAC) with 22 points and Ashley Kirkpatrick added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Each team had 35 rebounds. Shirey paced Grove City with six rebounds.

W&J went 26 for 32 (81 percent) at the foul line in the second half while Grove City went 2 for 4. For the game, the Presidents went 28 for 35 (80 percent) at the line and Grove City went 11 of 14 (79 percent).

Gibson recorded five assists. She and Gebrosky both had three steals. Grove City committed 23 turnovers and W&J had 17.

Grove City (7-16, 6-10 PAC) will host Waynesburg Wednesday at 6 p.m.
