Waynesburg clips Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 65-53 decision to visiting Waynesburg Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City trailed 24-18 at halftime but opened the second half by scoring 10 of the first 12 points. Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) drilled a three-point goal to start the period. Freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) then put Grove City ahead 28-26 with a three-pointer two minutes into the second half.

However, Waynesburg countered with a 10-0 run that featured seven points from junior guard Jessi Drayer. Grove City could get no closer than six points over the final eight minutes of the game.

Gibson led Grove City (7-17, 6-11 PAC) with 15 points while sophomore forward Hannah Jo Coneby (Maple Shade, N.J./Baptist) recorded a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) added 10 points.

Sophomore forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) also pulled in 11 rebounds. Waynesburg did hold a 47-44 edge on the glass.

Brittany Spencer led Waynesburg (18-6, 13-4 PAC) with 15 points. Paige Pearce posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. Grove City held Waynesburg to just 33 percent (22 of 67) shooting from the field. Grove City went 20 for 56 (36 percent) from the floor. The Wolverines had 20 turnovers, though, compared to only nine for Waynesburg.

Grove City honored Gebrosky and senior forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) prior to the game as part of Senior Night festivities.

The Wolverines conclude the regular season Saturday at conference foe Thiel. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
