Wolverines fall in conference quarterfinals

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 70-47 decision to top-seeded Thomas More Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Connor Convocation Center.

Grove City, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, trailed 21-13 with 4:21 left in the first half but used a 9-2 spurt to pull to within one, 23-22.

Junior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) drilled a jumper to start the run and senior guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) followed with a four-point play. Sophomore Sadie Malone (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mount Vernon) drilled a three-pointer, slashing the lead to 23-22 with 1:12 left in the half.

However, Thomas More (22-4) scored the final six points of the half and led 29-22 at intermission. The Saints then scored the first six points of the second half to open up a 35-22 lead. Thomas More maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Gebrosky led Grove City with 12 points and Gibson finished with 11. The Wolverines shot 17 for 51 (33 percent) from the field. Thomas More finished the game 29 for 66 (44 percent) after going 18 for 31 (58 percent) in the second half.

Sophomore Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) led Grove City with six rebounds and freshman guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded five assists. Gebrosky had three steals.

Allison Long and Devin Beasley led Thomas More with 15 points. Katie Kees recorded an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double. Thomas More outrebounded Grove City 43-33.

Thomas More will host the tournament's semifinals and finals Friday and Saturday. Grove City will lose Gebrosky and senior forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) to graduation.
