Grove City blitzes Baptist Bible in opener

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season Thursday night by rolling to a 60-40 win at Baptist Bible in non-conference action.

Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) paced Grove City (1-0) with 18 points while junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille Union) added 11 points.

Defensively, Grove City limited the Defenders (17-8 in 2011-12) to just 36 percent (16 of 45) shooting from the field. Grove City also forced 27 turnovers and owned a 41-27 edge in rebounds.

Grove City led 27-25 at halftime and held a 34-31 lead with 14 minutes left. The Wolverines held Baptist Bible without a field goal for over six minutes as the lead grew to 44-31. Wells highlighted the run with a three-point play while Gibson added a jumper during that span.

Baptist Bible cut the lead to 46-39 with 6:38 left but Grove City held the Defenders to just one point over the remainder of the second half.

Wells, sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia), sophomore center Marie Carroll (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman center Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) all had five rebounds. Shirey and senior Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) both had four assists.

Kelly Bargfeldt led Baptist Bible with 11 points.

Grove City will visit Carnegie Mellon Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in non-conference action.
