CMU tops Grove City
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 overall Tuesday night with a 66-49 setback at Carnegie Mellon in non-conference action at Skibo Gymnasium.
Grove City fell behind 9-0 early but countered with a 18-2 run to take the lead. Junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) helped spark the run with a three-pointer. Her three-point play with 9:30 left in the half put the Wolverines up 11-9.
Sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) drained a three-pointer and a jumper on consecutive possessions to push Grove City's lead to 18-11 with six minutes left in the half. However, CMU (2-1) closed the first half with a 14-0 spurt and led 34-22 at halftime.
Carnegie Mellon then held the Wolverines without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the second half while extending the lead to 47-26.
Shirey led Grove City with a season-high 18 points. Freshman forward Mary McDonald (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) pulled down a team-leading six rebounds while sophomore guard Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Joseph) had four assists. Shirey and freshman Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) both had three steals.
Grove City shot 17 of 51 (33 percent) from the field while CMU went 24 of 53 (45 percent). Carnegie Mellon owned a 39-32 edge in rebounds. Grove City forced 28 turnovers but committed 29 turnovers.
Liza Otto led the Tartans with 18 points.
Grove City will begin Presidents' Athletic Conference play November 28 at Thomas More. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
