Wolverines drop league lidlifter

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night with by dropping a 71-45 decision to No. 13 Thomas More (5-1, 1-0) at the Connor Convocation Center.

Grove City (1-2, 0-1) trailed just 39-33 early in the second half but Thomas More took command of the game by embarking on a 24-10 run.

Sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) led Grove City with 12 points and a game-high five assists. Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added nine points and four assists while freshman forward Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) tossed in eight points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Grove City shot 48 percent (13 of 27) from the field in the first half but converted only six of 27 (22 percent) shots in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines shot 19 of 54 (35 percent). Thomas More finished the game 29 of 62 (47 percent) from the floor. Grove City held a 42-30 rebound edge as freshman forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) paced the Wolverines with six rebounds.

Allison Long led Thomas More with 20 points.

Grove City will open the home portion of the 2012-13 schedule Saturday against visiting Bethany at 1 p.m. in conference action.
