Wolverines charge past Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by earning a come-from-behind 59-46 win over Waynesburg (2-5, 1-2 PAC) in conference action at Rudy Marisa Field House.

Grove City fell behind 8-0 early and trailed by as many as 10, 22-12, in the first half. The Wolverines eventually cut the lead to 25-21 by halftime and took their first lead of the game with 15 minutes left, 34-33, when senior guard Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) drilled a three-pointer.

Grove City (3-2 overall) took the lead for good with 7:30 left when senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) broke a 42-42 tie with a three-pointer. Gibson scored seven straight points for the Wolverines and sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) followed with a three-pointer.

The Wolverines closed the game on a 12-2 run over the final five minutes.

Gibson scored 20 of her game-high 23 points in the second half while Shirey finished with 15 points and five assists. Maust added eight points.

Defensively, Grove City held Waynesburg to 14 of 60 (23 percent) shooting from the field, including an 0-for-11 effort on three-pointers in the game. Grove City shot 32 percent (19 of 59).

Junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) and freshman guard Megan Walters (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) each led Grove City with seven rebounds. Waynesburg held a 49-46 edge on the glass.

Jessi Drayer led Waynesburg with 14 points.

Grove City will host Saint Vincent Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference play.
