Grove City falls in defensive struggle
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team fell to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 47-42 setback against visiting Saint Vincent in the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City held a 37-30 lead with 8:49 left but Saint Vincent closed the game on a 17-5 run. The Bearcats held Grove City to just one field goal over that span.
Defensively, Grove City limited Saint Vincent to a 19-for-64 (30 percent) effort on field goals. Grove City went 13 for 42 (31 percent) from the floor for the game.
Grove City took a 10-3 lead in the first half but Saint Vincent rallied to grab an 18-14 lead by halftime.
Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) led the Wolverines with 16 points and now has 991 points for her career. Senior guard Alicia Maust (Natrona Heights, Pa./Cheswick Christian) added nine points.
Sophomore guard Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Joseph) pulled down a team-high six rebounds and sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded five assists.
Devin McGrath led Saint Vincent (5-3, 3-1) with 13 points while Jordan Clinton added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Saint Vincent owned a 42-39 edge in rebounds with 20 of the Bearcat rebounds coming at the offensive end. Saint Vincent had 17 turnovers and Grove City committed 27 turnovers.
Grove City will host Allegheny Wednesday at 6 p.m. in non-conference action.
