Gibson scores 1,000th but Wolverines drop non-league tilt

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) became the 11th Grove City College women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points Wednesday night but the Wolverines dropped a 65-51 decision to visiting Allegheny (5-4) in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Gibson fired in a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and moved her career point total to 1,014. She went over the 1,000-point mark by hitting a mid-range jumper with 2:20 left in the first half.

Allegheny jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first half but Grove City pulled to within 28-20 by halftime. In the second half, Gibson scored seven straight points to help the Wolverines slash the gap to 39-35 with 10:40 remaining. Allegheny broke open the game, however, with a 19-5 run.

Sophomore guard Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) added 12 points and a game-high four assists for Grove City (3-4). She also led Grove City with six rebounds.

Grove City shot 45 percent (21 of 47) from the floor and limited Allegheny to a 19-for-54 (35 percent) effort. Allegheny went 22 of 26 at the foul line while Grove City made just two of its seven foul shots. The Wolverines also committed 25 turnovers.

Daryl Ford led Allegheny with 18 points and Emma Pellicano added 17 points.

Grove City returns to action Friday, December 28 against Malone at 2:30 p.m. The non-conference game will be played at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
