Wolverines open 2013 with win
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 60-43 victory at Chatham. The Wolverines jumped out to a 15-7 lead and never trailed.
Freshman forward Kathryn Erbelding (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) paced Grove City (4-5 overall) with a career-high 15 points and senior guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 13 points.
Grove City led 29-19 at halftime and broke open the game with a 17-2 run in the second half. Gibson's layup with 15:40 remaining helped ignite the run while Erbelding closed the spurt with a three-point play.
Grove City owned a 63-24 edge in rebounds, including a season-high 31 offensive rebounds. Freshman Ausinette Rodriguez (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Erbelding each led the Wolverines with nine rebounds while Gibson, sophomore center Marie Carroll (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and junior forward Annie Wells (Waterville, Vt./Lamoille) all had seven boards.
Rodriguez also had five steals and Erbelding recorded four steals. Gibson and sophomore Brandy Nickoloff (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Joseph) both had three assists.
Grove City shot 27 of 76 (36 percent) from the field while holding Chatham (1-10, 1-4 PAC) to a 15-of-49 (31 percent) effort.
Rachel McClain led Chatham with 20 points.
Grove City (4-5 overall) will visit Geneva Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference action.
